Junk Mail

Just over 3 years after I moved to Aller, my junk mail blocker has run out and the deluge of unwanted paper has brought out my Victor Meldrew streak. Did you know:

• The UK creates 550,000 tonnes of junk mail every year.
• 6 trees are used to produce 1 tonne of junk mail.
• The average household gets 224 pieces of junk mail every year.
• So every year 3,300,000 trees are cut down to produce 550,000 tonnes of junk mail.

Save yourself the annoyance of junk mail.


1. For addressed JUNK MAIL
Contact the Mailing Preference Service and register with them that you no longer wish to receive any junk mail. By supplying the Mailing Preference Service with your name and address, you will gradually receive less addressed junk mail. The entire process takes up to 4 months to start completely and lasts for 5 years.
You will still receive mail from companies that you have done business with in the past e.g. catalogue companies.

2. For un-addressed JUNK MAIL
Much of the junk mail that people receive is posted out on a regional basis to every household. By completing the Royal Mail Door to Door service postcard, giving your name and full address, you will stop receiving some un-addressed junk mail. This can take up to 6 weeks.
By using this service, as well as stopping the delivery of unaddressed advertising material delivered by Royal Mail, you will also stop unaddressed deliveries sent in this way by your local councils, which may contain information of interest and use to you.
